A short video filmed by Panpan Yang
Handscroll is a conversation between Panpan Yang and Diyou Yu. The work transforms a found object – the toilet roll – into a work of contemporary art, one that calls for a status of contemplation and attentive appreciation. It also questions the blurring of the boundaries between art and everyday life.
The toilet roll unfolds section by section. The movement strikingly resembles that of a handscroll, with its hidden scenes slowly unfurling in the immediate future. Panpan Yang's poem, also titled "Handscroll," was written from the perspective of the toilet roll, which was a calligraphic scroll in its previous life. The work is threrefore s a meta-picture, a handscroll that questions what a handscroll is: perhaps what defines a handscroll is not its materiality or components, but rather a way of seeing.
The printing process was time-consuming and repetitive. Due to the fragility of the toilet paper, Diyou Yu printed the artwork with extreme attentiveness and vigilance. The printing process almost became a way of meditation, with special attention to the interactions between the paper and the ink roller and plate, movements of the hands pulling the handle of the press, and the ways in which the paper subtly responds to the complexities of its surroundings.
