Panpan Yang holds a joint Ph.D. degree in Cinema and Media Studies and East Asian Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago, where she is currently a postdoctoral teaching fellow in the Humanities. Her first book project asks how Chinese animation thinks—not “thinks about” or “thinks through”—time and space to a degree unimaginable in live-action cinema. Concurrently, she is pursuing a second book project on the calligraphic imagination in film and new media.

She is broadly interested in the relations between cinema and other art forms, questions of cultural flows, geopolitics of film and media theories, and digital humanities.

Outside of academia, she explores creative possibilities in poetry, design, and animation.
